SXSW DAY TWO
I started out the evening with a movie, "Operation: Dreamland." It was about an army unit in Fajulla. It was pretty good, but not exactly a pick-me-up. After the movie I headed over to Antone's, the same venue as yesterday. But on the way I had to walk through a St. Patrick's Day block party. If there is anything worse than drunk Irish, it's drunk Irish Texans.
But anyway, it was Americana Music Association night at Antone's. When I got there the Duhks were just finishing up. They sounded very good (for Canadians). Especially their soulful female singer. Next up was Jim Lauderdale, also very good. Following him was Ray Wylie Hubbard - just so so. At about this point I was questioning my decision to stay at Antone's for the whole night. But I didn't want to have to face those Irish Texans again.
Just then I noticed Dennis Quaid was right in front of me. I probably haven't told you this before, but Dennis is on my I'm-not-gay-but-if-I-was list. So being this close was pretty disconcerting. After a bit, Dennis went to the bathroom. There I was, leaning against the wall w/ my feet crossed. Just then a woman tripped over my foot. In order to prevent her from falling (and only to prevent her from falling), I managed to catch her via my hand encapsulating her boob. Now I'm not sure if it was just to ensure her safety or just my natural reaction, but I believe I applied a little pressure. After she regained her footing, she looked right at me and said, "Sorry. And thank you." This confused me, but then she just left.
Next on stage was Robert Earl Keen. He was one of the people I definitely wanted to see. His set was just okay. Okay that is until he brought up his old college roommate, Lyle Lovett. And I guess it was a very big deal cause they hadn't been on stage together for 30 years. Todd Snider also hopped up. And the three of them were great.
Next up, Tony Joe White of "Polk Salad Annie" and "A Rainy Night in Georgia." He really rocked w/ his swamp rock blues. Really outstanding. I did miss a small portion of his set though because of the guy w/ cerebral palsy sitting next to me. It wasn't really his fault though. He was the only guy w/ a stool - cause of his CP. Anyway, this other guy walks this girl up to him and says she needs to sit down. The dude next to me explains that he has CP and can't give up his stool. The girl says she really has to sit down. The guy starts saying he has CP again, when the girl just faints. Being the quick-thinking & reacting type of guy I am, I catch her before she hits the concrete (no boobs this time - that wouldn't be right with her being unconscious and all). Turns out she was having a seizure. She regained consciousness after 10 seconds or so and I got her to a different stool and the club guys took over from there.
So now I'm really getting into Tony Joe White now when this guy kind of hits me from behind as he's passing. I turn and Dennis Quaid looks me in the eyes and says, "Excuse me." I don't say anything.
Finally Webb Wilder comes on. He is also one of the guys I specifically wanted to see. I've been aware of him since my college days. He's a rockabilly dude. But by the time he came on I was spent mentally. I only stayed for three or four of his songs. They were good, but not good enough to get me to stay.
Good night.
